The Annual May/June 2019
|
The William Floyd High School students never cease to amaze Mrs. Luongo, their photography teacher. This year's photography is better than ever, new twists and imagination combined with a little effort and skill produced a year full of great images. Congratulations to all the Photography Students on a fantastic Photo Show!
The Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day is held each year on the last Sunday in April. This year's Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day was on Sunday, April 28, 2019. In order to participate, one must have taken the photograph using a camera that is lens-less, it can only have a pinhole to let the light in. Also the photo must be taken on the day that is designated as Pinhole Photography Day. As this day was during our schools Spring break, we had to load our cameras, set them up, and let them expose for 11 days while we were out on break to include the official "DAY" within the exposure time. We closed the blinds so that the photos would not be over exposed in the 11 days and hoped for the best! Many did successfully record an image and our classes were busy the next few weeks learning to scan our black and white pinhole negative photograph, then we learned to reverse it into a positive in Photoshop, and then the students uploaded their photographs to the International Website. We created a Gallery Group called W. Floyd HS Photo Classes, where all of our photos are on display for the world to see! Click the link below to go to our gallery page:

4/9/2019 STEAM Symposium:
Photo Students participated in Interactive Booth Display that featured their beautiful Refraction Photography!Students prepared for the display at the 2019 Steam Symposium by first coming up with a science-art related idea. Students then they planned their images and created striped backgrounds in class. Using glasses and containers of water, students placed these in front of the striped designs and observed the refraction through the camera, composed their shots and took their digital photos in class. These were then edited when necessary in Photoshop and printed for display at the Steam Symposium.
|
Student volunteers from Mrs. Luongo's Photography Classes attended the Symposium to help set up the display for onlookers to then take their very own Refraction Photographs. Students explained the science theory behind these amazing abstract images to the attendees and helped the attendees take cell phone photos for themselves! What started as a classroom photo assignment turned into an exciting experience for all!

Unity Week Sept 2019:
Photo Classes create Gandhi Visuals for HS Unity Week Art Show
Every September our School District celebrates Unity Week. This year, students of Mrs. Luongo's Photo Classes updated last years huge 3-D "WISDOM" letters to incorporate large photos of Mahatma Gandhi. Students had to research appropriate photos, download, save them, learn to use the classroom large format printer, and scale and print the photos to the correct size to fit onto the sides of the existing letters. Students carefully cut the photos of Gandhi into silhouettes and glued neatly. This was a lot of hands on work that involved 12 large prints and lots of photo students to make the letters that spell "WISDOM" reflect the contributions that Gandhi made to the world during our celebration of Unity Week.

APRIL 2016: Contest Excitement!
Assemblyman Dean Murray's Annual Photography Contest 2016
We had more participants in this photo contest than any previous year! Congratulations to all participants and those whose works were chosen to exhibit in the reception show! For the second year in a row, William Floyd High School students swept the top three spots in New York State Assemblyman Dean Murray’s student photography contest, which requested pictures of places, events and activities that showcased students’ schools and hometowns. Entries were judged by a panel looking at content, photographic competence and other artistic factors. The award-winning student photography was displayed at Brookhaven Town Hall during a congratulatory reception hosted by Assemblyman Murray. William Floyd students also received three honorable mention awards.
The top three students were Kasey Hammel, 11th grade, first place; Tiffany Negron, 10th grade, second place; and Sara Mason, 11th grade, third place. Receiving honorable mentions Michelle Descalzo, 11th grade; Kristen O’Shea, 12th grade; and Shayla Scott, 11th grade. Also chosen for display and present at the show from our school was Micheal Fuzie, I think he was really supposed to be an "honorable mention" simply because his work was displayed at the show, and he was even invited to attend, but the logistics of the awards somehow get mixed up a bit sometimes at these kinds of things. Even so, I am proud of all my photo students for simply entering their work and putting themselves "out there". |
Pictured below are the students whose work was on display at the Reception, see the Gallery tab for this award winning photography soon!

NYSATA Portfolio Presentations; May 15, 2015

Earlier this month, 41 William Floyd High School art students in grades nine through 12 received the highest rating of “Distinguished” on their portfolios at the annual New York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA) Portfolio Project adjudication held at Sachem East High School.
To participate, students must be nominated by their teachers and then present their work before a professional artist for assessment and feedback. The Portfolio Project is an authentic assessment tool that provides students with an opportunity to present their portfolios and demonstrate their understanding and success in the visual arts.
The students’ projects will be on display at the Anthony Giordano Art Gallery at Dowling College in Oakdale until May 16.
Congratulations to all the students and their art teachers!
